West Hills is on the northwest edge of Los Angeles, within an hour of downtown. What really attracts residents to West Hills is the beautiful scenery that surrounds it. The Susana Mountains provide a lovely permanent backdrop and the community borders natural areas on three of its four sides. West Hills was once home to the Chumash Indians. The eucalyptus trees in Shadow Ranch Park were imported from Australia and are thought to be the parent trees of all the eucalyptus trees in California. For a long time, West Hills was part of neighboring Canoga Park but split off into its own community in 1987. There are a variety of home styles in West Hills from post-WWII bungalows to large luxury homes, to custom-built and Mediterranean-influenced homes.
West Hills is popular as a retirement and family community and has one of the largest populations in all of Los Angeles County. The neighborhood is known for being tight-knit, walkable, and dog friendly. Some favorite local eateries include Stonefire Grill, Jinky’s Cafe, and Nico’s Family Restaurant. There are some good shopping malls nearby like Westfield Topanga and the Village, but residents most appreciate the fresh air and natural backdrop to this quiet and peaceful neighborhood.

Local Lifestyle
West Hills offers an affluent, suburban lifestyle. Residents are laid-back and friendly. It has the feel of a small town where everyone knows their neighbors. Generally, it offers a nice haven of serenity with peace and quiet away from the noise of downtown Los Angeles and the paparazzi of Hollywood and Beverly Hills. Early in the morning before it gets too hot, or around sunset when it cools off, you are likely to see people out walking and jogging, many with their four-legged best friends.
For shopping, both the larger Westfield Topanga and the Village and the Commons at Calabasas are close to West Hills. They have high-end designer chains and boutique shops. In the heart of the West Hills neighborhood, you will find Platt Village and Fallbrook Mall.
Boarding the neighborhood is the Cave of Munits and you can hike trails in the Las Virgenes Canyon. Not far to the north, you can find more natural areas in Rocky Peak Park.
